One of the first species we came across on a most memorable day in a fabulous Paramo within a day's drive from Bogota. Where we came to an abrupt halt on seeing this very silvery plant or is it a shrub? It was growing amongst grasses and dwarf bamboo on a very exposed hillside on a short, but broad trunk to about a meter tall. Topped with a rosette of broad sword-shaped silvery-white leaves 75-80 cm long with slender long flowering scapes about 1m long with a terminal cluster of yellow rayed flowers, accompanied by a smaller cluster slightly lower on the scape. We have had some success growing these outdoors in a well drained, but moisture retentive soil that is well lit, but does not get excessively hot in summer, although it was -15C that killed them off after many years.
