Description: A species which it is easy to see the affinity to Magnolia in, with the large glossy foliage, combined with the unmistakable (star-anise-like) seed capsules with 13 carpels renders it easily identifiable even when the scented red to white flowers are not to be seen. Not flowered for us yet, but is stated to be April-June in the wild while fruiting July to October. From a collection gathered with Peter Wharton from a small to medium tree in the forests bordering with China in the very north of Vietnam in 2007. Easily grown in a moisture retentive drained fertile soil in sun to light shade, best sheltered from freezing winds.
