Description:
It was wonderful to see a new species to us after three hours of hard track driving into the páramo from the outskirts of Bogota. At a lower elevation than most of our journey at 3,100m, we came across huge silver balls of congested narrow sword-shaped leaves with very long slender long branched inflorescences which would have held smallish yellow rayed flowers earlier in the year. This was growing within a gregarious colony mixed in with small shrubs, grasses and other perennials. We have had some success growing these outdoors in a well drained, but moisture retentive soil that is well lit, but does not get excessively hot in summer, although it was -15C that killed them off after many years.
